Keeping your Gums Fit

Gum disease is the major cause for tooth loss after the age of thirty. It is estimated that over 80% of the adult population has gum disease to some degree. Studies indicate that gum disease is linked to heart, kidney and liver diseases.

Gingivitis becomes periodontitis; a serious problem as pockets form around teeth that become deeper than 3mm. As a result, you have debris and bacteria living in these pockets that can lead to chronic gum infection, bad tastes and bad breath and serious, permanent bone and tooth loss. When pocket depths reach 4 mm and beyond, only a dentist or hygienist can get to the bottom and keep them clean.

Until recently, the only way to control advanced cases of periodontal disease involving deep pocket damage to gum tissue was periodontal surgery which cuts away the gums so pockets can be kept clean and small. It is a more invasive procedure that may cause increased sensitivity.

Now a less invasive non-surgical therapy is available, Laser Assisted Periodontal Therapy. The soft tissue laser is used to remove diseased, infected tissue around your teeth and selectively targets only the unhealthy tissue without harming healthy tissue. This effective new technology in dentistry for the treatment of gum disease allows dentists and hygienists to work faster and with more precise control. The benefits are faster healing, less bleeding, and reduced swelling.

Make your oral health part of your daily work out. Brushing your teeth two or more times a day and flossing once a day, along with maintaining a healthy diet will keep your gums and teeth healthy. And be sure to see your dentist regularly.
