BACK TO FAQ LIST What is Gum Disease?Studies demonstrate that at least 75% of extractions performed on adults are due to periodontal (gum) disease. Once known as "pyorrhea," periodontitis is primarily caused by the same factors that cause tooth decay – the accumulation of plaque at and beneath the gum line. In its early stages gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) affects 98% of the population. Left untreated, it is likely to lead to mild, moderate, and ultimately, advanced periodontitis with premature loss of teeth. Periodontal disease can be prevented, by the practice of good oral hygiene which includes brushing 2x a day more, flossing daily and maintaining a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. |
