Introducing VELscope™ - an important and conservative new option in the detection of Oral Cancer
Dr. Debra McIntosh is excited to announce that we have incorporated the VELscope® System into our dental practice.
The VELscope System, recently approved by the FDA, was developed by the British Columbia Cancer Agency and Vancouver-based LED Dental Inc. It is a revolutionary hand-held device that provides dentists and hygienists with a new tool to aid in the early detection of oral cancer. The VELscope examination is a non-invasive, painless procedure which takes only a few minutes. Barbara Groh, Registered Dental Hygienist, explains, "Using a blue light fluorescent light helps Dr. McIntosh visualize abnormal tissue which may be, or may lead to, oral cancer."
Over 30,000 people are diagnosed with oral cancer annually in the United States. With a mortality rate of over 50% at 5 years, one person every hour of every day dies of oral cancer in America. If detected early however, oral cancer is 90% survivable. "We've always conducted an annual comprehensive oral cancer screening for all of our patients, but the VELscope System will allow us to see things we've been unable to see previously. By detecting potential problems earlier, we'll be providing our patients with the best oral health care currently available". States Dr. McIntosh
The exam will be included in every 6 month exam for adults. For patients with concerns and want to schedule an examination, please call 513.573.9949.
Debra McIntosh, DMD among the first dentists in Greater Cincinnati to administer Botox® Cosmetic and Dermal Fillers
Mason, Ohio October 13, 2010... Dr. Debra McIntosh is committed to providing her patients the latest advances in dentistry and specialty cosmetic enhancements including facial aesthetics She now offers BOTOX® Cosmetic and JUVÉDERM™ as adjunct therapies to her aesthetic dental services. Dr. McIntosh recently received her license to administer BOTOX® and dermal filler treatments from the American Academy of Facial Esthetics.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to temporarily improve the look of moderate-to-severe wrinkles on the forehead in people 18 to 65 years of age. JUVÉDERM™ is an injectable gel filler that is used to instantly smooth away creases around the mouth and nose. After one treatment individuals can achieve smooth and natural-looking results that last up to a year.
In September of 2010, the Ohio State Dental Board granted approval for dentists to administer Botox and dermal fillers to their patients. "We are thrilled to be one of the first dentists in Ohio to offer facial esthetics to our patients. These therapies will complement our cosmetic dental services," explains Debra McIntosh, DMD.
According to the Allergan Corporation, the manufacturer of BOTOX® and Juvederm, approximately 10% of dentists in North America are currently providing BOTOX® injections to patients for cosmetic treatment.
Dentists have been trained in the oral and maxillofacial areas (chin to forehead) as much, or more than, other health care professionals who administer Botox and dermal fillers. A dentist's knowledge of these areas, in addition to having the training to take care of complications in facial areas, give them the ability to master the techniques of administering these non-surgical cosmetic treatments.
Women and men who have experienced fillers delivered with just topical skin anesthetics often say that the level of pain does not grant the results and would not go through the experience again. "As a dentist, I am very familiar with two things: the function of each muscle in the face and giving intra-oral injections," said Dr. McIntosh. One of the biggest advantages of going to Dr. McIntosh for BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers is her gentle touch and how she and her team make patients feel cared for and comfortable.
Dr. McIntosh is partnering with Allergan Corporation, a world leader in medical aesthetics. Their portfolio includes BOTOX® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA and hyaluronic acid dermal fillers including the JUVADERM® dermal filler gel family of products, the first and only hyaluronic acid dermal fillers clinically proven to last for up to one year.
Using BOTOX® in conjunction with dermal filler therapy, Dr. McIntosh will have the ability to provide patients nonsurgical alternatives to correcting conditions such as high lip lines. Typically she would have to perform a periodontal flap surgery in order to raise the gingival height to meet the lip line.
Dr. McIntosh's approach to cosmetic dentistry is personalized. She conducts a complete smile analysis that includes the patient's facial features. Now by applying dermal fillers, Dr. McIntosh can correct thinning lips and the wrinkles around the mouth to beautifully frame a gorgeous new smile.
Patients can schedule stand alone Botox and Juverderm treatments or they can be in combination with check-ups and other dental appointments. Botox treatments take about 10 minutes. Dr. McIntosh will also designate Botox and Juverderm days offering special pricing.
Dr. McIntosh is a graduate of the Medical College of Georgia and has achieved a Master Level Certification in Cosmetic Dentistry from the Aesthetic Advantage Institute. She is licensed by the State of Ohio and is Northeast Regional Dental Board Certified. Dr. McIntosh is member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentists.

A New You Head to Toe
Mason, Ohio January 5, 2005... Angela Colwell will be featured on WCPO/Channel 9's program A New You Head to Toe on January 18, 2005 at 8:00p.m. Angela recently underwent a smile makeover designed by Debra McIntosh, D.M.D.
Angela Colwell, a full-time student and Occupational Therapist, had always been unhappy with her smile. "I never smiled at people or in pictures," said Angela. At her wedding Angela did not smile because she was bothered by the gaps between her teeth. "I look back and wish I could redo my wedding photos," Angela stated. She had worn braces twice during grade school to correct the spaces, but both times proved unsuccessful.
"Braces straighten teeth but do not position them correctly," explained Dr. McIntosh. "Angela's lower teeth were fine," continued McIntosh. "She had an overbite... her teeth flared out a bit and they were square shaped."
After visiting other cosmetic dentists, Angela felt at home when she came to Dr. McIntosh's office. For the first time she was asked to explain what she wanted and she was impressed with the personal and attentive care. "I listen to patients to see what they want and encourage them to bring a friend or family member to the consultations ensuring they understand all that is involved in the process of redesigning a smile," said McIntosh.
Angela would call Dr. McIntosh regularly with questions before making a decision. She felt special that Dr. McIntosh was always there for her. Dr. McIntosh redesigned Angela's smile using porcelain veneers on her upper teeth. She moved her teeth back into position and made them round and more feminine. Today she has a gorgeous new smile that has changed her life. "I am so happy to help Angela feel confident about her smile," said Dr. McIntosh.
"I have waited years for this," Angela said with excitement. "I have to remind myself to smile. I love my big radiant smile. My self-esteem has improved. I love it," exclaimed Angela.
